Working with a sculptor, has inspired me to work in three-dimensions again. Any new medium is a unique opportunity to explore our personal visual language and how it consciously or subconsciously enters everything we make as artists. It is fascinating to watch the lines, shapes and forms of my drawings and paintings reemerge in clay. I didn’t plan the sculptures. I simply began to carve out shapes and lines in response to what was already there. This is much the way I paint and draw after the first few marks are made. Whatever medium I use, I approach art-making with excitement, curiosity and a delight in my materials. In this case, a lump of clay and simple wooden carving tools. In the following unfinished sculptures, I worked intuitively by making rapid aesthetic choices. As each piece developed, I increasingly appreciated the limitations of the cool, soft, slightly gritty clay body. Abstraction is born from the endless possibilities of imagination that set us free and the natural constraints of our materials, which ground us. This is why I love it!
