What I have learned through years of teaching, practicing and studying art… My premise in teaching art is that no one needs to be taught what they like and don’t like in art. We all know. When given an unstructured task like abstract art, we choose the colours, lines, shapes and forms that we enjoy or even embody. This is a great way to explore our individual expression and preferences. Throughout our lives, we each become increasingly aware of what is attractive and meaningful in the visual world. Each us spends our time reenforcing and refining our personal aesthetic in everyday life and it eventually becomes embedded in our identity. And so, expressive abstract drawing and painting can make our individual ‘taste’ or creative tendencies more obvious. It fascinates me to observe the way different people dress, ‘decorate’ living spaces or choose the places they spend leisure time. I don’t think these are accidental or random choices. Instead, I think that when we are free to choose, these choices are an aesthetic expression of our deeper selves.
