It has been a busy winter. Partly because I am preparing for a show….

Joel Prevost and Darcy Johnson invite you to their art exhibit, ‘Encoded Forms’ at the Vancouver Island Sculpting Studio, 294 Harewood Road, Nanaimo, BC. Come and meet the artists and see their work from April 22nd to May 1st.

Joel is a classical sculptor of the human form. Darcy is an abstract artist who is interested in the human mind, memory and organic processes. Both artists have had many years to develop their particular visual language and find that there are ways their artwork overlaps and inspires the other. 

For this exhibit, Darcy and Joel have each done specific drawings and sculptures that respond to each other's artwork. These collaborations reference the changing human experience of ourselves and our environment. Both Joel’s and Darcy’s work expresses the ‘organic’ coming to terms with the ‘synthetic’ as we collectively confront technology, consciousness and our relationship to other organisms.

Thanks to Bil Derby for generously volunteering to photograph dozens of drawings for this show in his kitchen. This is a very technical job and the results are beautiful… certainly nothing I could have pulled off on my own. You can see some of the results below…

There is no way I can write today without acknowledging the war in Ukraine. It is not a ‘conflict’, it is a war. An unwanted invasion of a country that is like any other country…. with families, jobs, dreams … all stripped away so quickly… This link is approved by the Cabinet Ministers of Ukraine, if you want to support the Ukrainian people through this terrible time.

I am grateful to be able to work play and create on the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation.
